Research and Development Activities

Summary of Current Research and Development Activities

Focus is on three fields of research medical ethics and patient participation in health care. I am currently completing a chapter in a book which I have been invited to write on the topic of Religion and Nursing. In addition, I have been involved with the Shlesinger Institute of Jewish Medical Ethics, both as a writer for ASSIA and a developer of seminars for medical and nursing students (in which I also lecture). I am currently working on research in the field of health promotion for children and the elderly (as well as the chronically il). This research focuses primarily on how to empower individuals to care for their health and utilize the health services available to the maximum.

It is perhaps here worthy of note that I almost single-handedly built the department of Nursing in Machon Tal, which today numbers approximately 170 students, taught by an impressive staff with outstanding academic and clinical credentials. Clinical sites in Jerusalem and other areas in the country have become affiliated with the department to the extent necessary for meeting all the requirements of the Ministryof Health. Next year (please G-D), the department will be graduating its first nurses.

Listing of current research:

Promoting self-management in clients with type II diabetes. In conjunction with Dr. Rivkah Hazzan and the Israel Clalit Sick Fund Nurses’ role in increasing compliance to fecal occult blood screening In conjunction with Dr. Rivkah Hazzan and the Israel Clalit Sick Fund.

Editor of the book: “Tishrei Thoughts” by Rabbi Benzion GreenbergerScope of Practice of the Registered Nurse in Israel (together with: S. Riba, and S. Reicher)

Gene expression of postnatal depression as screening measure (in collaboration with Dr. Anna Lansman and Dr. Rafael Adelman of the Eitanim Mental Health Center Accidents among young children in the Haredi Jewish Community (in collaboration with Dr. Liat Koren (instructor in Sociology of Health in the Nursing Department and in conjuction with the Maccabi Sick Fund) Students’ perceptions of Caring in the Nursing Profession (in collaboration with Dr. Laurie Glick, Nursing Instructor at Machon Tal).

Future Directions for Research and Development.

In addition to continuing the research and development cited above, I plan to explore the role of the clinical nursing mentor and how to increase the education clinical competence of mentors in terms of their ability to properly support, serve as a resource, and evaluate nursing students.
